The green anole may seem like an ideal, inexpensive pet, but that’s not quite true. While the lizard can be inexpensive to buy, it’s the maintenance that can get pricey, and maintaining any lizard’s habitat and health isn’t exactly simple.
Anoles are often (incorrectly) referred to as chameleons or geckos. Although they can change colors (from a bright green to brown), they aren’t true chameleons. They can be kept singly or in a group, though males can become territorial and can fight with one another if kept in captivity together, so it’s better to have one male and a few females if you wish to house a group of anoles.
Habitat requirements for the green anole are a minimum ten-gallon tank for a few anoles, larger for a bigger group. They require a tropical setting with a temperature of about 75 degrees and 70% humidity, with plenty of plants and branches. A heating pad may be required to maintain a higher temperature and a humidity gauge is a good idea to be sure the humidity level is good for your pet. The habitat should be misted with water often (a few times per day) to provide water for the lizards, as they won’t typically drink from a water dish. Misting will also help keep the humidity at a satisfactory level. Light should also be provided for the anole, about 10-12 hours per day with a full spectrum basking light.
An anole will typically eat live crickets (which should be fed vitamins for the lizard’s benefit) and sometimes mealworms. You can try feeding it live caught insects (avoid pill bugs, fireflies and beetles), but be certain they are free from pollutants and pesticides first.
The average anole can live up to seven or eight years in captivity, and adults can grow up to eight inches in length. They’re not terribly high maintenance, though the equipment needed for their habitat (heating pads, plants, day and night light sources) can become expensive. Also, be sure you’re able to acquire live feeding crickets easily for the anole.
Anoles can make good pets for children as they’re not aggressive, although handling them can be stressful to the pet, and if handled not gently enough, they can bite. Some anoles become comfortable with human contact, but it is generally stressful to them to be held.
As with any “exotic” pet, be sure there is a local veterinarian who is capable and willing to work with your pet should an emergency or illness occur. Also, as with any pet purchase, research is a good idea before getting a new pet. Make sure you’re prepared to care for and provide for a new addition to your family.
