the superpipe (snowboard pipe, not important) at one ppoints has a height of 40 and width of 50 feet. If a six foot man is standing on the edge of the pipe looking at a glove that fell off at the bottom of the pipe, then what is their angle of depression?
If they then glance up si that their angle of depression is 27 degrees at a hat that is 46.5 feet from their eyes, how far below the top of the pipe is the hat?
The first thing you need to do is draw a triange. You know that that the bottom=50 and the side=40. So you’re trying to find the angle in the top right hand corner.
So…tanx=opp/adj –> tan x=50/40 –> x=51.34 degrees
If you’re supposed to be including the guy, then the side=46 so you end up with 47.39 degrees.
For the second part of the problem, you need to draw another triangle. The bottom of the triangle is now 46.5 and the side is x. The angle in the bottom left hand corner is 27 degrees.
tanx=opp/adj –> tan 27=x/46.5 –> 46.5tan27=x –> x=23.69
