Step Boot

Nearly one in every four people who claim work-related disability will blame some form of foot injury for their disability. It seems obvious in hindsight, especially since people spend a great deal of time on their feet.

In hindsight, it seems obvious that we should dedicate a considerable amount of time to our safety boot or shoe purchase. After all, when deciding on wardrobe purchases, we will take the time to try on a variety of different outfits before getting our wallet out… we should spent at least double the time on our footwear. Yet we don’t.

Whether or not you work in construction, you should make sure the following five conditions are met before committing to making a new shoe or safety boot purchase. After all, foot injuries are not reserved solely for those who work in the field, factories, or other manually intensive roles.

1. The inner side of the boot must be straight from the hell to the tip of the toe.

You can determine this by pressing your boot against the side of the packaging box. It takes two seconds but is instrumental in reducing the likelihood of slips, falls, and strains.

2. Make sure your boot grips your heel firmly.

A firm grip of the heel will help stabilize your balance and reduce the chance of slipping. Your boot should fit snuggly around your heel so there is “slippage” within the boot. This will allow for a firmer “grip” within the boot, allowing you to have a more confident stance while working and thereby reducing the potential for slips.

3. The forepart of the boot should allow freedom of movement for the toes.

A boot that fits too tightly will impede circulation and could open the door to a whole new set of injuries. Ensure that your toes can “wiggle” about. (This is particularly important if you work in colder environments). If your toes are unable to wiggle about, you could lose feeling in your toes and the instep of your foot which will not allow “information” on potentially dangerous terrain to be felt when you step about.

4. Make sure there are fastenings across instep to prevent slipping when walking.

While a firmly supported heel is important, it only achieve one half of the desired sturdiness; the other part is making sure that your instep is firmly planted as well. A secure instep combined with a secure heel allows your boot to transfer “data” about your steps to your feet, allowing you to “feel” what is going on below your boots and determine whether you are on dangerous ground. Without such a lack of communication, you might not be able to react in time to avoid injury.

5. Purchase boots with a low, wide-based heel; flat boots are recommended.

Avoiding heeled boots is not only something that your feet will thank you for, but your lower back as well. Make sure you buy flat-soled boots so that you are better able to maintain your balance, but also to reduce longer-term aches and pains in your feet, legs, and back.

The above five criteria are important for people who work on their feet, but especially important where the risk of slips, falls, and strains are heightened in the work place. Since so much weight gets placed on our feet, we will experience immediate relief when we start to take better care of that area of our body.
