What is the highest elevation that is safe to hike in the Colorado Rockies?
It’s early June and I am itching to go fly fishing in the high alpine lakes and streams. I can look out my window and see that the peaks (Indian Peaks) are still covered with snow. Is it safe to hike and fish above 12,000′ this time of year? How high could I possible go without snowshoes? How deep is the snow on the peaks? Are there any online resources that track this type of data? Thank you for your attention.
I would imagine by now most of the higher lakes are ice free. snow this time of year is hard in the morning so you shouldn’t need snowshoes, besides most of the better fishing is done way lower than 12,000 feet, if you can see the indian peaks you are near denver or boulder, that means you have many options for fly fishin & you ought to be able to fish pretty much anywhere by now, though the rivers & streams might still be a bit high for the best fishin.
