Shopping for skis can be a stressful situation for anybody. It is hard to tell what is going to suit your needs best because you’re buying a product that cannot be used until there is snow. This means you don’t know if you got your moneys worth until the first snowfall. So some people have a problem committing to a product they don’t know if they are going to like 6 months down the road, or if it is even the type of ski they want to invest in. I have worked in the ski industry the last six years selling skis to all different types of people. I have found that there are seven helpful tips to picking the right ski, that fits anybody’s needs and abilities.

• Research companies: One of the best ways to decide on a ski that you would like is to look at the different ski companies that are out there. This is a good idea because you get a better understanding of skis when you go into a shop to look at them, so you don’t go in blind and know what you are looking at.

• Type of skiing: Understand yourself and ability when going in to look at skis. The sales person is going to ask you what kind of skiing you like to do. Be able to answer with things like; really aggressive skiing, causal skiing, only doing groomed trails, going off into the woods, hitting moguls, going into the park, skiing powder. This will narrow down the search a lot.

• Conditions: Know what kind of conditions you are going to be in for that season. If you’re going to be on the east cost for most of the season you want a ski that can grip ice. If you are going to be out west you want more of a powder ski.

• Size: This is the most common question asked, what size do I get? If you are an adult and are done growing you have the ability to choose the size that fits your skiing needs. If you want to be more aggressive and go faster on skis go for a longer pair that is going to measure up somewhere between bridge of your nose and the lower lid of your eye. If you want more control over the ski and the concentrate on making good turns a shorter ski works. Measure the ski between your lips and the tip of your nose.

• Amount of skiing: Try to decide and get a rough number of how many times you go out skiing in a season. This will determine how stiff or soft of a ski you should get.

• Children: Skiing with children can change how you want to ski. With younger children parents like to have skis that are going to allow them to teach their children. Then when the kids are older parents want skis that are going to be able to keep up with them.

• Love the skis: After doing all the research and determining what kind of skis you want you have to decide if you can see yourself on the skis for the long haul. It is good to decide this because if you are an adult buying the right kind of skis can last you a very long time and this is good because ski equipment is not cheap.

Buying ski equipment doesn’t have to be a huge production. Just know what you are looking for in a ski. Be confident in your abilities and know what you want to get out of the skis. For an adult who is fully grown buying a good pair of skis can last you a long time, so make sure you put your money to good use and really make sure that the skis you pick are ones you really love.
