Should I get a Treadmill?
I am a very active person and play tennis, run XC and track, and ski and snowboard in the winter on weekends. I want to keep in shape in the winter when it is impossible to run outside due to all the snow on the ground. I have been told that a treadmill is a great alternative, but other people say it is not good to run on a treadmill because it may ruin your form, etc. I understand that it is not good to only run on a treadmill, but due to the snow the only outdoor sports I am able to do half of the year are skiing and snowboarding and that is only possible twice a year. Please help! Thanks!
Does anyone know any good, budget-friendly treadmills? Thanks!
You should get a treadmill. I know someone that used to run for Nike and he would do his 20 milers on a treadmill to relieve the stress on his knees.
I try to train at least one day a week on the treadmill for a few reasons:
–A quality treadmill will reduce the impact to your body.
–A treadmill can teach you to run at a consistent pace.
–You can easily do speed workouts and hill workouts on a treadmill.
–Treadmills sometimes have to be used when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
–I can stretch, do a little warm up, stretch again before heading out for a real run.
–If it is very hot outside I can do my cool down on the treadmill.
–I can train at any hour, safely.
–Because it isn’t hot inside I can push myself harder if I want to.
–You get to run on a perfectly level surface
But there are some downsides…
–You need to run at a slight incline to make the effort equate to the effort required on an outdoor run. Even then it still isn’t the same.
–Lower quality treadmills can have decks which are way to bouncey. It is hard to run on these and I don’t think too much flex in the mill is good for your body.
–Lower quality ones can also have jerky belts which can hurt your form if you have to adjust and they can even cause some ankle pain as the belt pulls your foot on impact.
–Even on a quality treadmill it can take some getting used to.
–Running inside boring. Running outside is fun.
For me the positives outweigh the negatives by a wide margin and I plan on investing in a high quality treadmill before winter.
