It’s a common misconception that antiques just aren’t affordable for most of us to buy.
When it comes to buying antiques it’s just about like everything else, you can find some great bargains with a little patience and persistence. And besides… antique shopping is a great way to spend an afternoon.
The toughest aspect about antique buying for most people is simply that they don’t know the true value of a particular item that they are looking at. It simply may have caught their eye and brought back fond memories of a time gone by.
Since it’s not usually possible to go to another antique store and compare prices you pretty much have to make your decision on the spot on just how much you’re willing to pay for an item. Don’t be shy about negotiating the price either. But if the negotiations break down you’ll simply have to try to find a comparable item elsewhere.
As with any business it’s a good idea to do a bit of checking on the reputation of the antique shop itself. Once you find a good one and get to know the owner a bit chances are you’ll be able to get even that are deals on items that you like. So not only being a frequent customer helps, but bringing in new customers with you will also go a long way to developing your relationship with the antique owner. This can be a rather fruitful friendship as well because bringing new customers to the antique owner shop will get you noticed as well.
This is why small antique shops can generally offer you better deals on the pieces that you like as opposed to going to a larger less personal antique mall.
Also when you start talking price with the antique owner remember the golden rule that money talks. So, take plenty of cash with you when you’re out seriously looking to buy an antique piece that you’ve had your eye on. That’s cash not credit cards.
You can even make sure that the antique shop owner is aware that you have enough cash with you to purchase the item. For example, when offering a price you can actually pull money out of your pocket as you’re discussing how much you have available with you to purchase the item. This does two things for you; it lets the antique owner know that your negotiations are serious, and it also lets them know that you have the cash to back it up.
Make sure that you take time to thoroughly examine the item that you’re looking at my because you will be purchasing the antique in the condition that it is in. You don’t want to discover that something is nothing more than a piece of junk rather than a great bargain after you get it home.
Don’t have the expectation that you’re going to take home a priceless antique that is in mint condition for a very low price. I’m sure you may have heard stories of such but in reality and teach shop owners are quite aware of the value of their items. So, if you’re looking for a particular item be sure to do your homework and look around a good bit so you have a good understanding of what is genuine for this item and what is not. And you’ll also know what is a genuine price for this item and what is not.
Don’t be afraid to carry on a casual conversation with the antique owner about your item. Work into negotiating for your item gradually before you jump into trying to get the antique owner to come off the price. And it’s always best to ask if an antique owner would accept a given price that you’re thinking of rather than you just bluntly asking the antique owner to come off the price.
Be friendly, but don’t be afraid to be assertive when going after what you believe to be a good but fair price and you’ll be on your way to antique bargaining.
