As Ryan stated this works for most pros who are NOT racing or competing. For racers a scratch in the base can very costly. For instructors who teach the general public, it becomes a habit of step with the ski across the uphill heel piece and release, then do the downhill with the boot. Instructor skis get run over by students and other people on the tops, and after a couple of years of that the teaching pair are just about done except for teaching.
