Indianapolis is a great destination for both motor sports fans and families. There’s so much to see and do, you’ll want to extend your trip. Indianapolis has some areas around town where city planners thought the idea of one-way roads made sense. It’s always entertaining to see a vehicle with out-of-state plates turning onto a one-way road and the subsequent look of terror in the eyes of the driver when they realize their predicament. Indianapolis is an inviting city with an array of attractions suited to a variety of interests. Our hotel, near the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is also convenient to a number of Indianapolis attractions, including museums, fine-dining and world-class shopping.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway prohibits entry with glass containers and bottles, but allows personal coolers — hard and soft-sided — with a size restriction of no larger than 14 x 14 x 14 inches. Personal bags and backpacks are allowed but must not exceed 14 x 14 x 14 inches. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the home of the Indianapolis 500, the best known auto race in the world, and the site of numerous automotive breakthroughs. They bought 320 acres of farmland, just across 16th Street from Fisher’s and Allison’s Prest-O-Lite auto headlight plant. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is known as “The Brickyard” and is the original “speedway” having called itself such before all others. Its “Brickyard” tag comes from its early track, which was composed of crushed bricks, and proved to be one of the most lethal tracks NASCAR has ever known.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, or the Brickyard, hosts only one race each season, but make no mistake about it: This is an important race in the drivers’ eyes. The rich history of the track creates a very competitive and challenging race. Drivers have to fight their way through the turns, which doesn’t bode well for racing the new car at Indy. This is the first time the Car of Tomorrow — now just “the car” — will race at the Brickyard. Drivers are trying to get past the car in front of them, all the while fighting off the car behind them. The cars are no where near as capable as open-wheel, but there is non-stop racing action through out the event. Drivers complained of a loose car during a night race (when cars typically run tight) at Chicago. If the sun is out during the hot Hoosier summer, they’ll have a really loose car at Indy.
The Brickyard’s site is not that flashy. There’s info about the museum, which seems to me to be pretty interesting, if and only if you’re interested in old race cars. The Brickyard 400 is easily the second most prestigious event on the NASCAR calendar outside of the Daytona 500. Although the racing action is not typically all that dramatic, the Brickyard is perhaps the truest measuring stick of the strength of a team.
