Fake Snow

There will be always a system of priorities that every U.S. president must create. If the candidates speak truth, their number one priority next January will be the economy. More specifically, if they work on issues in order of importance, then it will go something like this. The president will try very hard to lower gas prices, then go to work generating jobs, then dealing with the troop situation in Iraq, and so on.
However, this next president will be able to have a global impact on a global crisis. Climate change will only get worse as the months go on, so Senators Obama or McCain must place climate change high on the list of priorities. However, how high exactly it will be is a question of debate. Fortunately, this author is here to help. Here are three reasons why the next president must act immediately on global warming.
Reason one: resource scarcity. To site but just one example, there was a drought in Atlanta last summer. The mayor (I believe it was him anyway) even went so far as to pray for rain, gathering a few people to join him. Bill Richardson, before he dropped out of the democratic primary season, spoke very highly about a national water policy. Demand for water (the drinkable kind) will continue to rise over the next four years, and states without access to large lakes of water will be in trouble. Gov. Granholm of Michigan will be in a tight spot in the upcoming years as more and more states ask for access to the Great Lakes. Although it would be a good way to earn money for the very poor state, she will severly limit this hoarding of fresh water, if she allows it at all.
Reason two: revenue stream (i.e. tourism). Again, examining only the U.S., tourism is a massive revenue source. Obviously Alaska will greatly suffer if its winter season continues to shrink, but there are others as well. The southwestern states have been tolerated because of the Grand Canyon (among other things). If you have ever been to Arizona or New Mexico during the summer months, you knew it would be hot. But you tolerated it because the end result would be worth it. If the temperature rises enough that people stop coming, then all sorts of problems crop up. Or, try visiting Colorado during a shorter winter season. With warmer temperatures comes a shorter skiing and snowboarding season. This means the resorts must spend more money to make more fake snow, which means they have less money to go around. This is a nice segway to point three.
Reason three: jobs! Yes that four letter word is everywhere these days. Job loss this and layoff that; it is enough to make one crazy. However, the next president must realize that there are thousands of jobs that can be created in regards to fighting the climate crisis. Cheverolet has already announced it will sell a new electric car by 2010, and already thousands of people have ordered one. The jobs needed to build one car on that scale are numerous. Think of how many people would need to be employed to build wind farms to power the U.S. How many engineers would be needed to build solar panels on businesses if they were given the money to do so? More importantly, how many schools could return to a five day school week if the school buses ran on something other than gasoline. People would be needed to convert old busses to some other energy source and build new ones as well.
There are three solid reasons why Senators Obama and McCain must not ignore climate crisis. More importantly, these three reasons show why it is actually benefitial to meet this crisis head on. This problem can be solved; it merely requires the right leader for the job.
