Figure skating/Dance?
Do you need to do dance to be a great competitive figure skater?
because im not the most artistic one in the bunch. would dance help? if so what kind and how much? THANKS!!
I skate 5 days a week 1-2 hrs a day
You do not need dance to be a figure skater . . . but certainly dance can help to make you become a BETTER artistic figure skater.
Ballet is most similar to figure skating, afterall a lot of skating positions were taken from classic ballet. Many rinks offer ballet classes off or on the ice – check those options first as you would learn dance moves that would apply most to your skating. It’s good to at least know some ballet basics and then move onto other dance forms (if you wanted to) so you could get a feel for what style suits you best for your “artistic” approach to figure skating.
Dance can strengthen a lot of stuff we’re supposed to do on ice. I think it’s easier to isolate certain issues on the floor than on the ice (on the ice you are constantly gliding so it’s harder to “feel” everything, right or wrong).
**Good posture and body alignment . . . which would make you “look” more pleasing and actually make skating easier on you (keeping shoulders down, head up, back arched, hip tucked in, etc etc).
** Musicality . . . which would help you to understand music timing and to better interpret your music with your skating.
** Arm and leg positions/extention . . . which would help with artistry as you’ll understand why arms don’t just hang there and how it’s important to keep those toes pointed.
** Learning to “act” and express emotion with your body . . . to show you how to put music and body language together to set the mood and tell a story with your skating. That’s probably the hardest part for those who don’t feel they are “artistic” on the ice.
For starters, I would take just one ballet class – once class a week is enough for now. You don’t want to get too pooped out and overloaded that it would hinder you from putting your all into skating. Plus you want to make sure you enjoy it too (to get the most out of learning from it).
Hope that helps!
