Cartel Snowboard Bindings

I decided to buy a pair of Burton Cartel bindings at the beginning of the 06/07 snowboard season. I got about 18-20 days on the snow in these bindings last year. I had previously ridden Flow bindings for two seasons. Here are my thoughts:

First, for those that aren’t familiar, the Burton Cartel is a freestyle binding whose major feature is Burton’s Skyback, the highest highback in their lineup. This thing has a huge amount of adjustability. The Cartel also features Burton’s SuperStrap ankle strap and Covertible Capstrap, which can be used as normal toe straps or around the front of your boot to give you extra control on tricks. The Capstrap was a major selling point for me as I spend about 60-70% of my time in the park.

I picked up my Cartel’s for about $225. I have seen some places selling them for under $200 this season. Anyway, the bindings help up really well last year. I am pretty rough on my equipment (I sometimes “forget” to wipe my stuff down or leave it sitting outside overnight, etc.). These things still look like new. I’m also fairly heavy for a snowboarder (about 180) and didn’t have any problems with broken straps, something that has been a huge problem for me with some of my other bindings.

The Burton Cartel’s aren’t the lightest binding on the market, but again, I’m 180 pounds and I don’t want something that is going to snap when I land awkwardly on a trick. The construction is truly solid. One problem I did have, which is not specific to this binding, is the screws coming loose repeatedly. I am not a huge fan of Burton’s screw alignment anyway.

All in all, the Burton Cartel is a very solid binding. With the price of these dropping to under $200, they are also a great value for your hard earned cash.
