A lot of people are under the simple assumption that men and women’s boards can be alternated and switched up. While this may be possible, it isn’t exactly true. Boards, per se, aren’t interchangeable. There are men’s boards and women’s boards and there are a few differences between these boards. Besides the obvious design and colors there is also the difference in the bindings on the boards, as well as the actual size of the boards.
On women’s snowboards, the backs are usually shorter and wider than in men’s bindings. A women’s calf muscle is placed lower and wider than a men’s, whereas a men’s rest higher and tend to be longer. Men have “high back binding” on their boards. And, women have specific bindings on theirs. The sidecut on the board also differs. Women’s snowboards usually have a deeper side cut making it much easier to handle. Lastly, there is the flex. The flex is how the board bends lengthwise. Flex aids the rider in making softer turns and allows for easier maneuvers. Obviously men and women differ in shape and size. Men are usually bigger, heavier and have bigger feet where women are lighter and have smaller feet, although this isn’t always true! I’m 6″1, 155 lbs and I wear a size 9 1/2, but for the most part I have a girly figure.
There are several different companies geared towards making and selling women’s products fully or including women’s boards with men’s as well. I found an article recently that I was reading, about snowboards for women and this one included an article about the top 5 women’s snowboards and they are as follows:
1- Avalanche X-elle
2- GNU Barrett
3- K2 Luna
4- MLY Tempest
5- Nitro Glide
5- Sims Collection
The last two were tied for fifth place. Obviously there’s a ton more different women boards as well as sites geared toward specializing in women’s boards as well as integrating women’s boards with men’s boards, you just have to know what to look for! Watch out because some of these unnamed companies (venturesnowboards) don’t believe there is such a thing as women’s snowboards and obviously there is! However, for sites that do believe in differences between men and women boards (as well as other accessories) you can try the following sites listed below:
- HeelSide: Boards, gear, information and much more
- SnowBoarding: Snowboarding pictures, gear and product reviews, complete listing of US resorts, snow report links, links to satisfy every snowboarding question
